The American Society of Civil Engineers<\/span><\/span> student chapter at Fairmont State University<\/span><\/span> has built a distinguished reputation for leadership, professionalism, and competitive excellence within the civil engineering community. Founded to promote opportunities for civil engineering technology students while encouraging service, teamwork, and professional development, the chapter has long emphasized outreach, industry engagement, academic achievement, and student competitions.<\/p>\n

Throughout its history, the chapter has consistently earned recognition at both the regional and international levels. Fairmont State received numerous ASCE Commendations. The chapter has earned the prestigious Zone IV Governor\u2019s Award multiple times and was repeatedly named a Ridgway Award finalist, placing it among the top student chapters in the world.<\/p>\n

One of the organization\u2019s greatest accomplishments has been its nationally recognized Concrete Canoe program. Fairmont State holds the record for the most consecutive appearances at the ASCE National Concrete Canoe Competition, competing against major engineering universities from across the country. The program has produced a long line of successful canoes, including The Mayfield<\/em>, Mountain Mama<\/em>, Fossil<\/em>, and The Colonel<\/em>. Recent achievements demonstrate that the chapter continues to thrive. In 2025, Fairmont State restarted the AISC Steel Bridge competition after a 15 year hiatus, and in 2026, the first ever Fairmont State Sustainable Solutions team was formed.<\/p>\n

Notably, the chapter\u2019s growing national reputation was further recognized when Fairmont State was selected to host the 2026 ASCE Civil Engineering Student Championships, marking the first time the international event will be held in West Virginia. Hosting the championship represents a significant milestone not only for the university and ASCE chapter, but also for the state of West Virginia and the surrounding engineering community. The selection reflects decades of student leadership, organizational excellence, and competitive achievement demonstrated by the Fairmont State chapter. By hosting the 2026 championships, Fairmont State ASCE continues its tradition of promoting innovation, professionalism, and hands-on engineering education while showcasing the university\u2019s long-standing commitment to student success and experiential learning.<\/p>\n
