Concrete Canoe

Each year the MTU Concrete Canoe Team, along with 200 other teams around the nation, design and build a concrete canoe which they take to a regional competition. We compete against teams from University of Michigan, Michigan State, and Western Michigan University among others. We’ve placed in the top 10 teams in the nation with a team best 3rd place finish in 2005 and 2012.

Timber Strong

Starting in 2022, Michigan Tech’s Timber Strong team is the latest addition to Michigan Tech’s ASCE teams. This program tasks schools to create a structurally sound and aesthetically pleasing two-story building with a cantilevered beam on one side. While younger than Michigan Tech’s Steel Bridge and Concrete Canoe teams, the Timber Strong has been as successful by winning first place last year and setting the national ASCE record for build time in under 15 minutes.

Steel Bridge

The Michigan Technological University Steel Bridge Team is a multidisciplinary group of students in the Houghton, MI area that have a passion for applying class related material to real life situations. The team designs, fabricates, and constructs a scale-model bridge based on various sets of standards put forth by AISC (which change each year).
